![]() ![]() It's not always instantaneous, particularly if you haven't opened an app in a few hours, but for the most part, everything from Netflix and Prime Video to Disney Plus, HBO Max and YouTube TV opened quickly. Opening and switching between apps were among the quickest I've ever encountered on a streaming stick. And in using the device over the past few days, I can report that it is, indeed, really fast. Ads are prevalent on the home screen and screensaverĪmazon touts the processor speed upgrade as one of the big reasons why this streaming stick warrants the "Max" name. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max is my favorite Fire TV yet, but unless you're heavily invested in the e-Commerce giant's world of devices like Alexa speakers or Ring cameras, Roku's and Google's streamers are better options. Amazon's menu system is fine, but there are too many ads and the search often turned up unexpected results. Google's voice assistant and search work better than Alexa, and Roku's simple menu system is still my favorite of the three. That speed makes the Max worth the higher price compared to the original Fire TV Stick 4K.Īs for those debating between the Max and Google's $50 Chromecast with Google TV or Roku's upcoming $50 Streaming Stick 4K? That's a little more complicated. For those who simply want the quickest way to stream Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, YouTube TV and the rest, this streamer is (literally) tough to beat. A step up from the $40 Streaming Stick 4K, the new Max runs $55 and packs a faster processor, support for Wi-Fi 6 and nearly all the latest playback standards from 4K, HDR10 and Dolby Vision to HDR10+ plus Dolby Atmos for audio. Here are just a few notable ones I found once I had exhausted all Netflix options and was thirsty for more.Amazon's new Fire TV Stick Max is the company's highest-priced and most powerful streaming stick yet. While only four Yule logs are available on Netflix, almost every other streaming platform-Vimeo, Starz, Cartoon Network-feature their own warming glows. Non-Canon Yule Log Videos (Not on Netflix) Deducting a point because, for me, smaller logs are more interesting to watch burn, 4/5. SPOILER ALERT: Thirty-seven minutes in, a large log rolls out of the grate, creating a smoky effect in the right-hand corner of the screen for added interest. This edition features heftier pieces of wood so if you’re more of a size-queen, go for classic. It’s just the pure, unadulterated sounds of fire. Also like the birchwood one, this version has been graced by God and has no background Christmas music. Though, if you’re rich enough to own a 4K TV, you’re probably rich enough to own a functioning fireplace so you should just use that instead. Like its birchwood sibling, this baby is in 4K. But why, dear god, are you hosting a Bright-themed Halloween party? The single redeeming quality of this hour-long slap to the face of all that is holy of Yule log videos is that it has no background music, 1/5. ![]() The only occasion I could see you wanting to play this video is a Bright-themed Halloween party. You’re not safe, this flying maniac terrorizes us twice more before the welcome end of this abomination. Again, didn’t see the flick, this is just a guess. Presumably, this creature is a reused CGI fairy model from the film. ![]() SPOILER ALERT: Nine minutes in, a fairy flies in with all the grace of a captured bat with rabies. Like how my favorite McFlurry flavor reminds me to watch Shrek: Forever After. The answer probably lies in the fact that Yule log videos are cheap to make and tie-ins are a good way to remind you to watch that thing. “Why?” I found myself asking, “Why does this exist?” I did not watch Netflix’s Bright, but I can’t imagine even a hard-core fan of the Will Smith vehicle liking this video. ![]() Instead of the orangey-glow of real flames, we’re subjected to a CGI blaze that cycles through the color wheel like a cheap essential oil diffuser. Instead of a grate nestled in a brick hearth, we get a trash fire in a graffitied alleyway. Coming into this video after hours of mostly pleasant log fire-watching was jarring to say the least. ![]()
